Curriculum

Our curriculum is aligned with the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards and the Diocese of Brooklyn Catholic School standards.

Our teachers have flexibility with their lesson plans, which enables them to provide differentiated instruction to meet the needs of each child. A student’s particular learning style is determined by an annual assessment tool along with teacher observation. Sharing of student learning styles occurs between grades as a student progresses through the program. Data analysis from periodic testing assists our teachers to address any weak areas of the group or individual student and make needed adjustments to instruction.

Students in our elementary grades spend most of their day with their primary grade teacher. There, they will receive instruction in our core subjects: mathematics, science, language arts, religion, and social studies. They will also benefit from creative and innovative instruction in fine arts (music and art), technology, and physical education. Students in grades N-4 also attend weekly foreign language classes and visit the library once a week.

Early Childhood

Early Childhood education begins with the Nursery program and continues through Kindergarten.

A teacher and paraprofessional are present at all times in each of these grades. This greatly improves the student-teacher ratio and increases the opportunities for teachers and students to interact. These teachers are responsible for the teaching of Language Arts, Mathematics, Religion, Science, and Social Studies.

We have a commitment to the young child, a hands-on, activity-based approach is used in all subjects. Lessons are carefully integrated to help students recognize the relationships and connections that exist among the various subjects.

Elementary Program

Kindergarten – Third Grade: Primary teachers nurture students with a structured self contained environment. Within the environment, students are developing maturity and the ability to maintain a foundation needed to function in upper grades. Students in the primary grades learn all core subjects as well as weekly Physical Education, Art, Technology, Music, Spanish and Library classes. Our Smartboards bring the world and all of its resources into the classroom. Students in grade two are given instruction in the preparation of the Sacraments of Penance and Communion.

Fourth and Fifth Grade: Our Intermediate grades build on the basics that were taught in the primary grades and introduce new content material for the students. The classes are departmental and follow a five day schedule which includes all core subjects, as well as Physical Education, Art, Library, Spanish, Computer, and Music Classes. The students often work in cooperative groups or pairs as they complete projects, solve problems, and conduct research online. Teachers work closely with each other and with the special area teachers, to integrate curriculum, plan activities and special projects.

Junior High Program

Sixth-Eighth Grade: Continuity is our strength when it comes to educating students of this age. Where students in other schools would be transitioning to an entirely new environment, with unknown faculty, staff and administration, our middle school students have the benefit of continuing their educational experience with people who know and care about them. Here, our program is departmentalized. Your middle school child will change classes throughout the day as he or she migrates from one content area to the next. This Middle School model allows students in these grades to be leaders, mentors and role models. The model provides educational value by promoting patience, tolerance, and acceptance of others.

Students receive instruction in the five core subjects: Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, Religion, and Social Studies, as well as continuing their studies in Technology, Foreign Language, Fine Arts (music and art), and Physical Education. Eighth grade students are enrolled in Living Environment and Integrated Algebra courses (Regents level Biology and Math). Successful completion of these Regents courses and exams, will position your son or daughter to begin their freshman year of high school enrolled in 10th grade courses in these areas.
